History

Södertälje Båtsällskap (SBS) was founded on 21 June 1948. At that time the club had 65 members and 60 boats. Home harbour and yard have been in Torpaviken, Södertälje, from the start; the area was expanded gradually. In 1949 the club acquired its first club island, Axvika Holmar east of Mörkö, which today has fixed and floating pontoons for about 40 boats. In the early 1990s Södertälje municipality wanted to relocate the entire club when building Södertälje Syd railway station and use the land for industry; moving proved too costly, so SBS stayed and even gained an expanded area. In autumn 2007 SBS had 637 members and 499 registered boats, nearly 300 of them sailboats. The 60th anniversary was marked on 6 September 2008 with a day at the Torpa club grounds, including an open day, a sea rescue display, dinghy racing by the youth section and a jubilee dinner. The 70th anniversary was celebrated with a party and dancing on the newly built terrace. In 2024 SBS marked its 76th anniversary. Today the club has around 450 members and also runs the club islands Axvik and Fifång.
