Sejlklubben Neptun Vejle
Sejlklubben Neptun Vejle is the major local sailing club on Vejle Fjord in Denmark and welcomes sailing enthusiasts, visitors and guest sailors to its harbour clubrooms. Based at Stævnen 53 in 7100 Vejle, the club offers a clubhouse, an active youth section, a sailing school and J/70 activities on the fjord. Regular youth training takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays between 5 and 8 pm; there are also Tuesday and Thursday races and the certified New Sailors course. Founded in 1881, the club’s life is shaped by honorary members, mentor programmes and the Søstjernerne youth project; the 144th flag-raising ceremony in 2025 underlines its long tradition.
History
Sejlklubben Neptun Vejle was founded in 1881 and ranks among Denmark’s long-established sailing clubs. Since its founding only 30 honorary members have been appointed; this highest club honour requires unanimous approval by the general assembly. The first honorary member, in 1916, was steamship agent Otto Hansen, then the last surviving founder. In 1925 restaurateur P. Frederiksen and master baker Aug. Schwartz followed. Over the decades many further honorary members were named, including Otto Hansen (1916), P. Frederiksen and Aug. Schvartz (1925), Aage Christoffersen (1943), Hans Jensen (1944), Ditlev Nissen and H. F. Merrild (1956), Richard Andersen and Thorkild Warrer (1960), Edvard Andersen and Carl Jensen (1971), C. F. Christiansen and Ove Grau (1974), Olaf Larsen (1977) and more recently among others Ole Wittrup (2001), Carsten Faubel (2011), Preben Werther and Jørgen Holm Nyland (2016), Knud Isager (2017), Jens Peter Jensen (2018), Svend Aage Olesen (2020), Jan Ipsen (2021) and Anders Nielsen (2023). In 2015 the Søstjernerne youth project for children from age eight was launched, inspired by France and led by Morten Hollensberg Larsen; with support from Friluftsrådet it became a fully integrated part of the youth section. On 26 April 2025 the 144th flag-raising ceremony took place, with chairman Jan Vestergaard welcoming members, honorary members, sponsors and guests. Today club life includes club news and the club magazine, mentor offers for new sailors, the sailing school under Dansk Sejlunion, J/70 activities on Vejle Fjord and regular racing on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
