Club Nàutic El Masnou

Club Nàutic El Masnou is a long-established sailing, sports and leisure club on the Mediterranean with more than 50 years of history, located between the port and beach of El Masnou in the Maresme region near Barcelona. Beyond its racing fleet, the club offers Olympic and children's pools, fitness facilities, a spa, a beach area for surfing, windsurfing and paddle sports, and a lively social and cultural programme. History

The club's origins date back to the early 1950s, when a group of friends sought to revive El Masnou's maritime traditions and create a venue for water sports. The first general assembly was held on 8 November 1965; the clubhouse opened on 17 September 1967 with 278 founding members. At an extraordinary assembly on 20 September 1972, construction of the marina was approved; it was inaugurated on 3 June 1975. Since opening in 1967, sailing activity grew steadily: early regattas featured Vaurien, patí de vela, 470, powerboating, water skiing, cruising and 420. In late 1968 the club financed the purchase of 20 470-class boats—the largest fleet in Spain at the time. In 1968 it hosted the first Spanish Vaurien championship and the Catalan open-water powerboating finals. By July 1968 the club had 165 boats and introduced the sports member category with up to 147 federation licences. In early 1970 the board approved an Optimist fleet; a year later a Finn fleet with six helms began, followed by Europe, TDV (windsurf) and Laser. Since then the club has organised numerous national and international championships, including five European championships in club waters. From the outset it carried out major educational and promotional work in sailing. Today the club has two buildings: the social headquarters and the Base Nàutica at Port Esportiu El Masnou, opened on 21 March 1999 on approximately 1,600 m² as home to the sailing school and sports secretariat. In 1994–1995 the Escola de Vela launched school sailing; sailing is now recognised as a curricular credit. Sporting achievements range from Catalan titles to Olympic medals—1976 silver (470, Pere Lluís Millet), 1980 gold (Flying Dutchman, Miquel Noguer), 1992 silver (Europe, Natàlia Via-Dufresne), 1996 gold (470, Begonya Via-Dufresne and Theresa Zabel) and 2004 silver (470, Natàlia Via-Dufresne and Sandra Azón)—shaping the club's international reputation.
