Münchner Yacht-Club e.V.

Münchner Yacht-Club e.V. on the western shore of Starnberg Bay is one of Bavaria's oldest sailing clubs, with more than 700 members and over 111 years of tradition on the 58 km² Lake Starnberg. At the club site in Possenhofen, a historic 1884 villa, a new boathouse, moorings for around 150 boats and a club fleet with J/70, Streamline, Laser, Kielzugvogel and H-Boot are available. The MYC Sailing Academy trains children from age six, juniors and adults from their first time setting sail through to the squad of the German Sailing Bundesliga. The club organises up to 15 of its own regattas on the lake each year, including the popular Wednesday regatta, and combines competitive sport with recreational sailing, inclusion and club life in its own casino with a terrace on the water.

History

The history of Münchner Yacht-Club began in 1908 with the founding of the "Vereinigung Münchner Segler e.V." on Lake Würm, today's Lake Starnberg. This makes MYC one of Bavaria's oldest sailing clubs. Over time the name evolved from "Münchner Segler-Club e.V." to "Münchner Yacht-Club e.V." Dr Iris v. Hoyningen-Huene documented the key milestones in the centenary publication. In 1919 the club founded its own youth and junior section. Today the club has more than 700 members and is active in both recreational and competitive sailing. Since 2014 MYC has competed in the 1st German Sailing Bundesliga, gaining promotion from the 2nd league in its first year and reaching the Sailing Champions League in 2016. Since 2010 the club has run "Sailing for All" taster days for people with disabilities; inclusive sailing days started in 2019 and the first inclusive sailing course took place in 2022. MYC was awarded the "Sterne des Sports" for its social engagement. The MYC Sailing Academy now trains around 200 young sailors.
