Möltenorter Seglerkameradschaft e.V.

The Möltenorter Seglerkameradschaft e.V. (MSK) is a long-established sailing club on the eastern shore of Kiel Fjord in Möltenort near Heikendorf, founded on 31 October 1959 and a member of the German Sailing Association and the Schleswig-Holstein Sailing Association since 1960. With 350 members, the club offers a youth and clubhouse with workshop cellar and dinghy storage, 25 club dinghies and the seagoing club yacht Teamwork, plus training from the junior certificate through dinghy sailing to SBF Sea and SKS qualifications. In Heikendorf Bay, children and juniors train on Optimists and dinghies, while adults sail in the Friday dinghy group on Pirat, Splash and Europe boats. Racing shapes the season with Möltenort Wednesday regattas, the 24-hour race and the district youth championship co-hosted every two years. In winter, theory courses, licence training and social club events take place.

History

The Möltenorter Seglerkameradschaft e.V. was founded on 31 October 1959 in Möltenort under chairman Otto Schütt. The following year it joined the German Sailing Association (DSV) and the Schleswig-Holstein Sailing Association (SVSH). The youth section was established in 1963. Rapid growth led to the desire for a club house. In 1967 the club acquired the decommissioned lightship Kalkgrund (later Flensburg), which had served as a navigation mark for Flensburg Fjord from 1919 to 1963. The vessel was towed to Möltenort in 1968 and largely converted into the first MSK clubhouse by members' own labour. The first 24-hour race took place in 1974; since 1975 it has been run jointly with the Mönkeberg water sports association as a nationally significant event. In 1975 season-best prize races began, later becoming the Möltenort Wednesday series, co-organised with the Heikendorf Yacht Club or WSV since 1991. Cruising has always been important; the club repeatedly won the SVSH Hanse cog trophy for the most active cruising club statewide. Since 1974 MSK members have run courses from the junior certificate to the coastal yacht master licence. In 1984, the club's 25th anniversary, it had 332 members including 146 juniors. The lightship was sold in 1985 and now sails as the charter yacht Noorderlicht in the North Atlantic. In March 1989 the first sod was turned for today's youth and clubhouse at Möltenorter Weg 3; it was inaugurated on 10 February 1990. Since 1989 there has been close cooperation with the sailing club of Heinrich Heine Grammar School Heikendorf. Youth work was honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit for long-serving youth leader Herbert Hasenbein. In 2009 the club celebrated 50 years with 352 members. In 2024 the MSK marked its 65th anniversary. Today the club has 350 members, about 90 yachts and dinghies in private ownership, 25 club dinghies, the club yacht Teamwork, safety boats and a modern clubhouse.
