Mandal Seilforening
Mandal Seilforening is the sailing club in Mandal on Norway’s southern coast (Sørlandet), founded on 11 November 1974. Club life centres on Lillebanken with the Seilerhuset and a hireable clubhouse for up to 60 people, plus pontoons and Optimist dinghies for members. The programme includes Monday regattas in season, cruising in the archipelago, introductory windsurfing courses and model sailing (IOM). Beginners can join as crew; juniors follow the Norwegian Sailing Federation’s “Peiling på seiling” programme with a focus on mastery rather than competition. The club also runs events such as Sjøsportens Dag and takes part in the Seil UT Sør cruising competition.
History
Mandal Seilforening was founded on 11 November 1974 and is the sailing club of the town of Mandal on Norway’s southern coast. Over the decades the club has become a hub for keelboat sailing, cruising, windsurfing and youth sailing. For its 50th anniversary in 2024 it co-hosted model sailing regattas in Tregde with Norsk Modellseilforening (120th anniversary), including the Sørlandsmesterskap with former world champions and well-known Norwegian sailors. Today the club has the Seilerhuset and clubhouse at Lillebanken, Optimist dinghies and changing facilities for members, and windsurfing gear for loan. The programme covers Monday regattas in season, group trips in the archipelago and participation in Seil UT Sør; juniors are trained under “Peiling på seiling”. Events such as Sjøsportens Dag and the double-handed Race to the Arctic from Mandal to Svolvær shape current club life.
