Strömsinlahden Veneilijät ry
Strömsinlahden Veneilijät ry is a Finnish boat and sailing club based in the Roihuvuori district of Helsinki at the municipal Strömsinlahti boat harbour. The club uses a clubhouse with a terrace in the northern part of the harbour; the other half of the building serves the Tammisalo scout centre as a canoe shed. The programme includes joint trips and cruises, boat-care and harbour work parties, sea-safety information and participation in classic wooden-boat regattas such as Viaporin Tuoppi. Founded in 2004, the association promotes boating and safety on the water and looks back on more than twenty years of shared experiences at Strömsinlahti.
History
Strömsinlahden Veneilijät ry was founded in 2004. Its purpose is to promote and develop recreational boating and safety on the water. The club is based in a clubhouse with a terrace on Helsinki’s Strömsinlahti harbour area; the other half of the building is the canoe shed of the Tammisalo scout centre. To fulfil its aims the association provides equipment for members, maintains the clubroom and organises education, guidance and training related to boating, boat-maintenance work parties, boat trips and similar activities. Anyone who accepts the club’s purpose and practises boating may apply for membership; supporting members may join to help the club’s work. In autumn 2010 the clubhouse was relocated because of shoreline repair works. Members regularly sail classic wooden yachts such as S/Y Desire and S/Y Scalpella on trips around Helsinki, along Finland’s eastern coast and to Estonia, and take part in Suomenlinnan Pursiseura’s Viaporin Tuoppi, often finishing on the podium. The club stresses maritime safety, publishes rescue and fire-safety guidance and has taken part in harbour fire-extinguisher training.
