Lindauer Segler-Club e.V.
Lindauer Segler-Club e.V. is one of the most traditional sailing clubs on Lake Constance, located on Lindau island directly at the sailing harbour. The club operates a historically grown marina with 110 berths on the water, 50 dinghy spaces ashore and a clubhouse built in 1993 that also houses the Mole 3 restaurant. Sailing training begins at age seven on the Optimist, followed by single- and double-handed dinghies such as 29er, ILCA 7, 420er and 470er; the youth section has achieved numerous international successes. Regular Wednesday regattas, the legendary RUND UM long-distance race and class events such as the Manfred Wasmund Opti Regatta shape the racing programme. With almost 700 members, the club founded in 1889 offers diverse sailing from youth training and taster sessions to yachts and classic racing boats.
History
On 20 February 1889, the Lindauer Segler-Club was founded at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Fifteen members wanted to get on the water, belonging mainly to Lindau's upper middle class and aristocracy. After initial enthusiasm the young club fell into crisis and barely avoided dissolution around 1900. With the founders' sons came renewed growth: in 1911 the present sailing harbour and a small clubhouse were built. The First World War, the revolution and the transition to the Weimar Republic also affected the club. During the economic crisis of the 1920s the LSC built a new clubhouse. In the 1930s employees and craftsmen joined; youth was no longer made up only of grammar-school pupils. In 1937 the club purchased Bodan/Bayern II, an 8mR yacht built by Abeking and Rasmussen that became central to LSC identity and member cohesion. After the war, confiscated boats and occupied harbour facilities had to be recovered step by step; rebuilding began with the simplest means and members' own labour. In 1951 the LSC held the first RUND UM. In the 1960s the club acquired parts of the shipyard harbour and built Halle Zech in 1970. In a major effort the club completed a new clubhouse in 1992/1993. Since then there have been many modernisations: extension of the south mole, renovation of the boat ramp, Lochbrunner-Allee, extension of Halle Zech, and a new floating dock and shipyard pier. In 2006 the Lindauer Segler-Club organised the Eighth World Championship. Membership has grown rapidly over recent decades; today the club has almost 700 members.
