Lahden Purjehdusseura ry
Lahden Purjehdusseura ry (LPS) is a traditional sailing club in Lahti, Finland, founded in 1907 and one of the oldest clubs in the Päijät-Häme region. The club has around 560 members and runs its sailing and boating centre on Myllysaari Island on Lake Vesijärvi near the city centre. Facilities include pontoons, the historic Art Nouveau pavilion, the Suuli boat shed, the Sailing Center with a J/70 fleet and further bases on Lake Päijänne. The programme covers junior training with the Olympic Committee Star Club mark, competitive sailing, recreational boating and regular regattas. For more than a century LPS has shaped Lahti’s sailing scene and made it easier for all ages to take up boating.
History
Lahden Purjehdusseura ry was founded on 25 March 1907 and ranks among the oldest boating clubs in Päijät-Häme and Finland. In 1910 the club purchased Myllysaari Island on Lake Vesijärvi; the same year the wooden Art Nouveau pavilion designed by Lahti architect Uuno Alanko was completed and still anchors club life today. The name Myllysaari comes from a late-19th-century windmill. The Venesuuli boat shed was built in 1907 for storing and repairing wooden boats and still serves the club’s wooden-boat sailors; in 2024–2025 the roughly 280 m² hall was modernised and expanded for events. Since 1930 the club has leased the northern lagoon of Ykskoivu on Lake Päijänne and developed the base with pontoons, a barbecue shelter, sauna and the renovated Lassen maja. The Hökkä islands off Kuhmoinen have belonged to the club for nearly 30 years and are reserved for members only. LPS is a member of Suomen Purjehdus ja Veneily ry (SPV); junior activities carry the Olympic Committee Star Club mark. Today the strategy covers four core areas – juniors, competitive sport, recreational boating and Myllysaari – and the club has around 560 members.
