Oldenburger Yacht-Club e.V.
Oldenburger Yacht-Club e.V. (OYC) is a long-established water sports club in Oldenburg with departments for sailing and motorboats, canoeing and diving. At the Buschhagen peninsula site the club operates a clubhouse with catering, a pontoon berth for 45 boats, halls and winter storage. Further locations include the city harbour at Stau, the canoe facility at Achterdiek, the youth sailing section at Tweelbäker See and berths in Hooksiel on the North Sea. The club places great emphasis on training, youth work and community life with regattas, cruises, kale trips and events at the boathouse.
History
The Oldenburger Yacht-Club was founded in 1920 as "Verein Wassersport Oldenburg"; the first chairman was Georg Krüger. In 1923 it was renamed "Oldenburger Yacht-Club e.V." The first clubhouse was built beside the Huntebad in 1924 but had to be vacated in 1927. Paddlers moved to a clubhouse at Achterdiek, sailors received a mooring at the Jordan. Membership rose to 170 in 1926 and stood at 203 again in 1948. In 1952 the present clubhouse on the Buschhagen peninsula was leased from the city as a permanent home. A concrete boat hall was erected in 1958 and the clubhouse was extended in 1966. In 1967 youth sailors received 14 self-built Optimist dinghies. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1970. In 1972 "Sturmvogel II" won first place at the Edinburgh regatta. The first berths in Hooksiel outer harbour were created in 1978. Walter Pranger became German champion in the O-Jolle class in 1981. Bernd Kornemann was elected first chairman in 1989; junior world champion Jan-Dietmar Dellas brought international success. The OYC celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1995. Land for the youth section at Tweelbäker See was purchased in 1996 and the Hooksiel moorings were extended in 1997. The diving department was founded in 1999 with about 70 members. In 2005 the club bought the Achterdiek and Buschhagen peninsula properties. The new concrete pontoon at Buschhagen was inaugurated in 2006. The "Obadja" project with a 9.30 m training yacht started in 2012. The large hall ("Horst-van-der-Linde-Halle") was demolished and rebuilt in 2016. In 2019 the club had more than 500 members. The OYC celebrated its centenary in 2020; the anniversary event was postponed to 17 June 2023 due to Corona. Holger Eckert became first chairman in 2020, Michael Schmitz in 2021. The master plan for infrastructure renewal was completed and halls, boathouse and facilities were modernised. Traditional events such as kale trips, spring cruises, jazz morning sessions, shanty singing and the winter lecture series still shape club life today.
