Jacht Klub Morski Gryf
Jacht Klub Morski Gryf is a traditional sailing club in Gdynia on the Polish Baltic coast and ranks among the oldest sailing clubs in Poland. The club is based at al. Jana Pawła II 11A by the harbour of Gdynia and offers sailing and motorboat training with examination. Its programme includes club yachts, regattas such as Regaty Samotników and the Gdynia–Władysławowo–Gdynia races, as well as cruising and club sailing. Since its founding in 1928, the club has combined maritime tradition with an active community and welcomes new members.
History
On 30 October 1928 the sports club “GRYF” was founded in Gdynia; today’s successor is Jacht Klub Morski “GRYF”. The founding meeting took place at the Grand Cafe on ul. Świętojańska. Among the 41 founding members were engineer Tadeusz Wenda, designer and head of harbour construction, engineer Marian Bukowski, commander Józef Unrug and other figures of harbour building and maritime economy. The first president was bank director Wacław Wejers; secretary and treasurers came from the maritime office. The club was the first sports club in Gdynia and brought together harbour workers, maritime office staff, railway and postal employees and navy and merchant marine officers. Later well-known members included J. Sieradzki, Leonid Teliga and Zbigniew Puchalski. Founding documents from 1928 are held in the State Archive in Gdańsk (signature 124/1367). The club still maintains its history, regattas and club yachts and has celebrated its 90th and 95th anniversaries.
