JK "BURA" Makarska
Jedriličarski klub “BURA” Makarska is a traditional sailing club on the Dalmatian Adriatic coast in Makarska. The club is located on Obala Kralja Tomislava and focuses on the Optimist and Laser classes; depending on interest, cruisers are also available for training and club races. A sailing school for children aged 7 to 15, preparation for regattas across Croatia, the traditional Regata Hrvatskih Mornara and the Kup Makarske shape the programme. Since the founding initiative in 1949 and the start with the first Star dinghy in 1951, the club has become an active anchor of Makarska’s sailing scene and also offers boat lifting and washing via an electric crane.
History
On 15 April 1949, at the request of the then Pomorsko brodarsko društvo Narodne tehnike, a group of enthusiasts led by Ante Raffanelli – Baja organised the founding committee of the future sailing club in Makarska. Although Makarska lies by the sea, there were few boats then, and the appearance of a sailing dinghy aroused great interest among residents. The club’s value has always been not only sporting results but also educating many young people and fostering love of the sea and seafaring. Traditionally the club organises the “Regata Hrvatskih Mornara” in honour of the Battle of Makarska in 887, when the Narentines defeated Venetian Doge Pietro Candiano; the Croatian Navy later adopted that date as its day. Sailing club “Bura” was founded immediately after World War II; the true start of activity is considered 1951, when the first Star-class dinghy was acquired. In 1952 two further boats followed, including a 38-foot cruiser, enabling more young people to sail. Before the war only a few Makarska doctors had sport and leisure craft, mostly motorboats lost in the war; at the club’s founding there were only five smaller fishing sailboats in Makarska. In the 1960s the club already had 17 seaworthy wooden dinghies requiring regular maintenance; volunteers helped and gained skills for their own boats. Today the club focuses on Optimist and Laser, runs a children’s sailing school and prepares them for many regattas in Croatia. Depending on interest and numbers, member-owned cruisers are available for training and club races. Each year the club organises a cruiser regatta open to foreign boats as well as races for Optimist and Laser. The club has an electric crane and offers boat lifting and washing services.
