History

Jedriličarski klub Uskok has been active in Zadar since 1948. Founded as Pomorsko brodarsko društvo Zadar within Narodna tehnika and first based in Vruljica, members built their own boats of classes L5, Dinghy and Star. Around 1951 the club left Narodna tehnika and was renamed Jedriličarsko društvo Uskok. In 1980 the fleet included Optimists, Cadets, Lasers, 420s and 470s; after the 1979 Mediterranean Games in Split further boats arrived, including a Finn. In 1983 the club moved to Cape Vitrenjak, where it remains today. In 1994 it had only a few old boats of Optimist, Cadet, Laser, 420 and 470. Uskok has organised many international championships, including Snipe Europeans 1956, 470 Europeans 1999, 420 Europeans and 470 Worlds 2004, junior Europeans in 420 and 470 in 2008, 49er Europeans 2009, ISAF Youth Worlds 2011 and 49er Worlds 2012. Club sailors competed at the Olympics in Athens 2004, Qingdao 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. Notable results include Šime Fantela’s Optimist World bronze in 1998 and European titles in 420 and Laser 4.7. Today the club runs sailing schools, a J/70 sea school, training camps and a full regatta calendar; in 2028 JK Uskok will host the Open Optimist European Championship.
