JK Orsan
Jedriličarski klub Orsan (JK Orsan) is Dubrovnik’s traditional sailing club, based at Ivana Zajca 2 in the Lapad district with its own marina on the southern Dalmatian Adriatic. The club offers around 200 berths, an administration building, dinghy hangars, service workshops and, since 2016, about 120 metres of floating pontoons. The programme covers Optimist and ILCA sailing, a strong cruiser fleet, the well-known Liga Orsan and several club-hosted regattas. A children’s sailing school and a youth section with year-round race training shape club life; in 2024 the club celebrated its 90th anniversary.
History
Today’s JK Orsan traces its roots to 13 September 1933, when enthusiasts led by Viktor Paravić founded the sailing club “Lahor” in the city harbour. The following year the club moved to Lapad and became “Y.C. Argosy”, named after a respected Dubrovnik merchant ship. In 1936 it obtained a mooring permit and built the clubhouse on today’s site. In 1938 Karlo Bauman secured the first official regatta win. After World War II activity resumed in late 1945; in 1948 the club took the name “Jedriličarsko društvo ORSAN”, from Italian “darsena” (shipyard/arsenal). In 1949 the first Olympic Stars “Koraljka” and “Dubravka” arrived. Later years focused on singlehanded classes such as Olympic Yole, Finn, Laser, Cadet and youth boats. The legendary “Bobara” under Andro Knežević shaped club success from 1954 for three decades. In 1977 members self-built the cruiser “Argosy”; later over 20 “Čiopa” class boats were built. Orsan organised international events including Trani–Dubrovnik. The club today has a marina with 200 berths, offices, hangars and workshops. In the 1991 Homeland War it made its marina available to the armed boat detachment—seen as the start of the Croatian Navy—and was shelled on 11–12 November 1991; 20 boats sank and buildings were damaged. In 2013, for the 80th anniversary, the carbon club cruiser “Dubrovnik” (Enavigo) was launched—Croatia’s first pure racing carbon cruiser. It raced at ORC Worlds 2017 in Trieste and 2019 in Šibenik and won the Vis Regatta in 2018 and 2019. Members founded the winter training series “Liga Orsan”. In 2016, 120 metres of floating pontoons were added; in 2018/2019 a new youth hangar for Laser and Optimist was completed with city support—the first sport facility built in Dubrovnik since 1982. In 2018 club legend Andro Knežević died; the Optimist cup Kup Andra Kneževića honours him. In 2024 JK Orsan celebrated 90 years at the Marin Držić Theatre. Three club monographs cover the 30th, 40th and 80th anniversaries.

Youth section
Active youth section with annual sailing school (about 30–40 children), Optimist and ILCA training, race school with year-round training and qualifier regattas, and its own youth hangar.
