Jedriličarski klub Jugo
Jedriličarski klub Jugo (JK Jugo) is the sailing club of Mali Lošinj and one of the oldest sailing clubs on the Adriatic. It is based on the island of Lošinj in Croatia and uses the waters off Čikat and the harbour of Mali Lošinj for training and racing. Equipment includes two RIBs with outboard engines, trailers and a club van; club rooms at Škverić are shared with angling club ŠRD Udica. Focus classes are Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7, plus seniors on their own cruisers. The programme covers year-round youth training, a summer sailing school, national and international regattas, and hosting championships and traditional events such as Kup Lošinja and Lošinjska regata krstaša. Founded in 1949 as Pomorsko brodarsko društvo Jugo with the fleet launch in 1950, the club still shapes Lošinj sailing tradition today.
History
Sailing on Lošinj dates back to the 19th century, when shipbuilders competed in building fast boats and early regattas drew locals and tourists. Late-19th-century photos show pasare with lateen sails; in 1890 the Imperial Yacht Squadron in Pula under Archduke Karl Stephan promoted sport sailing. Many Lošinj sailors helped found Yacht Club Adriaco in Trieste in 1903; the first club yacht Adriaco was built on Lošinj in 1906. After World War II, pasara races inspired a club with international classes. In July 1949 Pomorsko brodarsko društvo Jugo was founded; on 29 April 1950 the first fleet of Star, L-5, O-Jolle and Omladinac was launched at Petar Tarabokija Violinčić’s yard at Škverić. In 1955 the board was elected under president Nikola Kjukić and secretary Anton Betić. Mario Fafangel and Karlo Bašić raced Star at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics; their yacht Primorka was restored in 2025 under the “Drvo je prvo” project. Since February 2015 an unpaid board led by Vedran Kabalin has run the club. Today JK Jugo hosts the Lošinj ILCA Spring Cup (since 2020), Memorial Agostino Straulino with Assonautica Pesaro, Lošinjska regata krstaša (over 40 years) and Kup Lošinja for Optimist (over 25 years), as well as Croatian championships.
