Halmstads Segelsällskap

Halmstads Segelsällskap is a traditional sailing club on Sweden’s west coast, founded in 1910, with its harbour at the mouth of the River Nissan in Halmstad. The club offers around 200 berths at the pontoons, winter storage ashore including a boat hall, clubhouse, sublift, guest berths and motorhome pitches. The programme includes a certified sailing school for Optimist and C55, active junior dinghy training, classic Tuesday evening racing since the 1930s, cruising flotillas and participation in Allsvenskan Segling with J/70. With over 600 members and a long regatta tradition including hosting SM, NM and WM events, HSS is a key hub for beginners and racing sailors in Laholm Bay.

History

Halmstads Segelsällskap was founded in 1910 and has been a meeting place for sailors on Sweden’s west coast for more than a hundred years. In the 1950s the club moved from its earlier site upstream on the Nissan to its present location near the river mouth; parts of today’s clubhouse were rolled to the new site by the then nearly 100 members and later extended, and the boat hall was built at the same time. Tuesday evening racing has been a core club activity since the 1930s. HSS built a strong racing tradition in often changeable Laholm Bay and over the years organised SM, NM, WM, Guldpokal and ranking events; historically a Laser world championship was among its major events. Since 2015 the club has competed in Allsvenskan Segling with modern short-course J/70 racing and mixed junior and senior teams. The sailing school for children, youth and adults and the voluntary HSS spirit (“we try to sort it ourselves”) still define the club; with over 600 members, about 200 berths and as many shore storage places, HSS is one of the established clubs in the region.
