Hochschul-Segelclub Hannover e.V.
Hochschul-Segelclub Hannover e.V. was founded in 1977 at the universities in Hanover and sails on Lake Steinhude near Steinhude. Unlike many other clubs, boat owners are a minority here: most members use the ten shared club boats – from Optimist and Laser via Zugvogel, Bahia and Vago to the keelboat Manta 19. The 30 km² inland lake offers space for recreational and competitive sailing; membership requires an official sailing licence (SBF-Binnen inland or the former A-certificate). At the jetty and in the clubhouse, members meet in good weather to sail, chat and barbecue; courses, match races and the annual club regatta complement the programme for beginners and advanced sailors.
History
Hochschul-Segelclub Hannover e.V. was founded in 1977 at the universities in Hanover and registered with the Hanover district court on 28 February 1977 (register no. VR 4031). The current articles of association were adopted at an extraordinary annual general meeting on 23 November 1977 and took effect on 1 January 1978. The club promotes sailing as amateur leisure and performance sport through training and practice, and is politically and denominationally neutral. It pursues charitable purposes under German tax law. The governing bodies are the general meeting, a four-member board (chair, deputy, secretary, treasurer) and the Schifferrat (skippers' council) comprising members elected for ongoing duties. While the board steers club affairs in broad terms, the Schifferrat handles day-to-day matters relating to boats, the sailing area and membership. The club maintains club grounds with a jetty on Lake Steinhude at Steinhude and a business address in Hanover. Over the decades the HSH has become a community of roughly one hundred members sailing ten club boats – boat owners remain the minority. Club life is weather-driven: in wind and sunshine people gather at the jetty or clubhouse without compulsory events or rigid traditions. Established customs include midsummer night sailing on the longest day of the year, the internal "Steinhuder Meerfest" during the festive weekend in August, and an annual club regatta. Legendary club trips included weekends at Lake Müritz in 2003, Folkeboat cruising around Rügen in 2004, and repeated visits to Hohwachter Bay from 2005 to 2010. Today the HSH offers a wide range of boats for beginners and advanced sailors, regular courses and regattas, and active club life on Lower Saxony's largest inland lake.
