Hjellestad Seilforening (HjS) is a traditional sailing sports club in Bergen municipality, Vestland, Norway, based at Hjellestadvegen 311 in Hjellestad right by the water next to the ferry quay and the club boathouse (naust). The club focuses on dinghy sailing for children and youth aged 7 to 18 and on keelboat sailing for adults in the Albin Express class, complemented by an active sailing school with courses for children and introductory courses for adults. Facilities include the naust with sauna, rental berths in the harbour and training groups in Optimist, ILCA and 29er. Founded on 20 July 1915, HjS is affiliated with the local sports council, Vestland Seilkrets and the Norwegian Sailing Federation and offers regular training, winter swimming and regatta support.
History
Hjellestad Seilforening was founded on 20 July 1915. For roughly the first forty years the traditional Oselvar boat class was the driving force of club life. Later other boat types were added. Today Optimist dinghy sailing forms the largest area of activity, especially in youth and sailing-school work. In 2007 the 29er class was introduced when two sailors wanted to commit seriously; however, no larger lasting environment developed from this. In parallel the club has built a sailing sports group for adults and youth in the Albin Express keelboat class, with shared training, social gatherings, courses and lectures. The boathouse (naust) in Ytrebygda/Fana serves as the club centre, can be rented and includes a sauna and harbour berths. HjS is affiliated with Idrettsrådet i Bergen, Vestland Seilkrets and Norges Seilforbund and operates under Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF) statutes.
