Heiligenseer Segel-Club e.V.

Heiligenseer Segel-Club e.V. is Berlin's smallest and northernmost sailing club, located in Heiligensee on the northern shore of Nieder Neuendorfer See. Founded in 1929, the club offers a clubhouse, a jetty with around 20 water berths and shore spaces for dinghies and Optimists. The largest youth section among neighbouring clubs trains weekly in Optimist, Teeny, 420 and ILCA classes and prepares juniors for the junior sailing certificate, regattas and optionally the inland pleasure craft licence. Alongside today's focus on cruising, the programme includes internal and external races, the Opti-Opa-Cup and the summer festival.

History

In 1929 four friends founded Heiligenseer Segel-Club under Carl Paetzold, who owned the waterfront plot in Heiligensee still used today, to foster watersports and camaraderie. A flagpole was raised on the existing jetty and the HSC burgee – a white H on a blue field – was hoisted. Construction of the boathouse began in 1932 and was completed in 1933 with limited means and members' craftsmanship. The club then enjoyed sporting success for years. The Berlin Wall in 1961 caused severe restrictions: members from the surrounding area were cut off and a buoy line divided the Upper Havel. Only after the Wall fell in 1989 could sailors again use the waters freely, cruise to the hinterland and the Baltic and attend regattas without barriers. Decades of work parties, jetty and house renovations, boat christenings and club life followed. Around 97 years after founding, the HSC remains an institution on Heiligensee and Berlin's smallest and northernmost sailing club – still on Carl Paetzold's grounds.
