Hässelby Sjösällskap
Hässelby Sjösällskap is a non-profit ideal association in Hässelby near Stockholm that has promoted boating life on eastern Lake Mälaren since 1927. The club’s harbour and yard lie within the Östra Mälaren water protection area at Sjöbacken 75 and include pontoons, a clubhouse and winter storage on the yard. Members take part in club and dinghy sailing via the sister sailing society, navigation courses, junior sailing and a new kayak section at the upgraded pier. Compulsory work parties and night watches plus events such as the annual herring lunch shape club life; joining requires at least a Swedish boat handling certificate and often several years’ wait for a berth.
History
Hässelby Sjösällskap was founded in 1927. About fifteen men gathered on the pier at Stenhagsbrinken, where local politician Albin Östergren chaired with a pencil as gavel; when he asked whether a boat club should be formed, those present answered with a loud yes, and the Sjösällskap was a fact. A preparatory meeting was held on 25 March 1927, and the plans were realised on 27 August. Most boats at the Stenhagsbrinken pier were then rowing boats with outboard motors, owned by workers and small traders in Hässelby and by Stockholmers with summer cottages. The pier of Hässelby båthamnsförening was a meeting place even on evenings without trips. The first four decades are documented in the commemorative booklet “1927 till 1967, Hässelby Sjösällskap under fyra årtionden” compiled by Rolf Nilsson. Today the club runs harbour and yard in the Östra Mälaren water protection area, maintains clubhouse and pontoons, cooperates with sister club Hässelby Segelsällskap and decided at the autumn meeting to start a kayak section.
