Horsens Sejlklub

History

On Friday 12 September 1879 the founding general meeting of Horsens Sejladsforening was held, later becoming Horsens Sejlklub. The Sunday before, a race had been held; at the subsequent shared meal it was decided to form a club – the town’s first sports association and Denmark’s sixth sailing club. Editor Emil Bojsen became the first chairman. In 1914 Horsens Sejlklub established Denmark’s first youth section, which later produced many top sailors. The first clubhouse was built in 1915 to designs by architect Viggo Norn on an island in the industrial harbour and in 1931 was moved on two large barges to the mainland tip of the pier. In 2014 it was replaced by a new, larger flood-protected clubhouse; the building cost of about 11 million kroner was funded half by donations and half by loans. Sportingly, Poul Ohff and his crew competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in the 5.5 m class. Steen Secher as crew for Jesper Bank won Olympic bronze in 1988 and gold in 1992 in Soling. Anne-Marie Rindom competed in London 2012, won bronze in 2016 and gold in 2021 plus silver in 2024 in Laser Radial (ILCA 6); Annette Viborg also raced Nacra 17 in Rio 2016. The club has won numerous Danish, Nordic, European and world titles. Notable leaders such as Erik Laursen and Carl Gerstrøm also served in Dansk Sejlunion and international bodies. At the 60th anniversary an honour badge was introduced (23 recipients), and at the centenary another (10 recipients). A jubilee book was published for the 125th anniversary.
