Holmestrand Seilforening
Holmestrand Seilforening is the sailing club of Holmestrand at the widest part of the Oslofjord between Holmestrand and Son. The club is based at the outer end of Hakan in the local small-boat harbour, offering a sheltered yet convenient starting point for sailing. The clubhouse Seilerhuset has toilets, changing rooms, a kitchen and a main room for teaching and events. The programme includes dinghy sailing for young sailors, weekly Wednesday regattas, social cruising trips and the women’s sailing initiative Hun Seiler. The fleet ranges from Optimist dinghies to ocean-going yachts; dinghy and keelboat training plus club boats are available to members.
History
Holmestrand has a long sailing-ship tradition: the town once had several shipping companies with sailing fleets, and trading vessels under sail called here, among other things, for timber. Although neighbouring towns in Vestfold founded sailing clubs earlier, interest among residents rose strongly in the 1970s. Holmestrand Seilforening was founded in 1974 as the number of sailboats in the town began to grow. The rapid boom of the 1970s and 1980s led sailors from Holmestrand to compete at national top level in keelboat racing. Today the harbour is a natural meeting place for locals, boat owners and visiting sailors. The clubhouse Seilerhuset at outer Hakan has been substantially upgraded in recent years and now includes toilets, changing rooms, a kitchen and a main room for teaching and club events. The club plans to develop Seilerhuset and the surrounding area into an attractive sailing centre. Holmestrand Seilforening is a member of Norges Idrettsforbund and Norges Seilforbund and is represented on the local sports council in Holmestrand.
