History

The club was founded in 1948 as Klub Morski Ligi Morskiej in Gliwice. After political changes it came under the League of Friends of the Soldier and later the League of National Defence (LOK). Today it operates as Klub Wodny Ligi Obrony Kraju named GARLAND in memory of sailors of the destroyer ORP Garland in World War II. In the 1950s and early 1960s the focus was maritime education, training for the Polish Navy, and sailing and motorboat courses. In the early 1960s a racing section began with Snipe and Finn boats from the Chojnice yard; sporting success set the club's direction. In the 1970s and 1980s youth and children's sailing grew with Optimist, Cadet, OK Dinghy and Europe. After borders opened, club sailors competed in Goldener Opti, Kiel Week, Youth SPA and European and World Championships in Spain, Norway, France and Poland. Members also built their own Omega, Optimist and Europe boats. Commodores since 1968 include Wojciech Kalaman, Jerzy Miśków, Grzegorz Kaleta, Czesław Sternal, Bogusław Nowakowski, Piotr Borowiec and Marcin Wilczek; since 2023 Aleksandra Rusin has been commodore. In 2025 the club became Poland's top ILCA club and a KLUB PRO beneficiary.
