Karlstads Segelsällskap
Karlstads Segelsällskap (KSS) is one of Sweden's oldest sailing clubs and the oldest sports association in the municipality of Karlstad. The club is located at Kanikenäset in Karlstad on Lake Vänern and operates a modern harbour with around 430 berths and as many winter storage places ashore. Facilities include a clubhouse with office, meeting rooms, kitchen and a hall for about 100 people, club boats and the club island Nabben with club cottage, sleeping huts, sauna and children's beach. Members can join youth and adult training, sprint and Allsvenskan practice, para sailing with adapted boats, Wednesday club races and courses from beginner level to coastal skipper exams. Since its founding on 7 August 1884, KSS with about 1,120 members and registered sailing and motor boats has been a central hub of the regional sailing community.
History
Karlstads Segelsällskap was founded on 7 August 1884 and is among Sweden's oldest sailing clubs as well as the oldest sports club in the municipality of Karlstad. Despite its long history the society remains very active. Today KSS has about 1,120 members including family members, with 422 registered sailing boats and 114 motor boats. Through extensive voluntary work the association has built a well-functioning harbour at Kanikenäset with around 430 pontoon berths and as many land storage places. There is also a clubhouse with office, meeting rooms, kitchen and assembly hall for about 100 people; in the winter half-year it is used intensively for meetings, training and social events. The club island Nabben lies about six nautical miles from the harbour and offers a club cottage, sleeping hut, sauna, barbecue area, children's beach and jetties; in some summers sheep graze on the island. Para sailing is part of the programme and is run with several specially adapted boats and a chase boat; the activity has been recognised by the Swedish Sailing Federation and the Skota hem foundation. The club also offers courses from beginner introduction to more advanced sailing and racing. Currently KSS takes part in Allsvenskan 2026 and organises events such as the CB66 Swedish Championship in September and the traditional Jäverön runt race.
