Kantvikin Purjehtijat ry
Kantvikin Purjehtijat ry is a Finnish sailing club and a member of Suomen Purjehdus ja Veneily ry. Club activity centres on the Hupisaari small-boat harbour in Kantvik and the dinghy sailing centre Jollaranta on Kantvik Bay. The harbour offers about 300 berths and winter storage for around 200 boats, plus Café Purje, a mast crane and member pontoons. The programme includes junior and Optimist training, Wednesday keelboat sails, windsurf sessions and the traditional Porkkala Race. The club grew out of the Optikerho founded in 1979 and was registered as a yacht club in 1982.
History
Kantvikin Purjehtijat ry grew out of the Optikerho workplace club of Suomen Sokeri Oy, founded in 1979 to guide juniors into a good hobby and to develop sailing on nearby shores. In 1982 the club was registered as an official yacht club after Optikerho had expanded beyond sugar-company employees into an open boat club. The Cultor group (now Danisco) leased land from 1987 to 1999 and provided material and financial support for youth and sailing work. In early 2000 Cultor sold the Hupisaari small-boat harbour area to the municipality of Kirkkonummi; berth management was given under a long-term agreement to Meri-Kantvik ry, founded in 1999 for that purpose, with KVP actively involved in establishing the marina association. The junior and dinghy base Jollaranta on the eastern shore of Kantvik Bay passed via Strömsby-Invest to the City of Helsinki in 2004; KVP holds a lease terminable with two sailing seasons’ notice. At the end of 2006 the club had about 300 members, more than 100 of them juniors. In 2024 the club celebrated its 45th anniversary. Youth work and local sailing remain core values.
