Gl. Kalvehave Bådelaug
Gl. Kalvehave Bådelaug is the boat association that manages the small harbour Gammel Kalvehave Havn west of Kalvehave Færgegård on the Danish south coast. The harbour sits in an idyllic setting with views across Ulvsund and Langø towards Møn and Tærø, offering about 45 berths inside the harbour and 12 outside the moles for smaller boats up to 6 metres in length, 2 metres in beam and 0.85 metres draught. Facilities include toilets, hot and cold water, a clubhouse, net houses, a shelter, and kayaks available for hire for trips in the surrounding waters. Leisure sailors and a few recreational fishers share the site; harbour, clubhouse and outdoor areas are maintained by the members themselves. The association combines maritime tradition at historic Kalvehave with a compact, community-run harbour.
History
The history of Kalvehave Færgegård and Gammel Kalvehave likely reaches back to the earliest settlements after the Ice Age and into the Stone Age; numerous flint tools and remains of settlements and shell middens have been found along the coast. In 1304 the place is mentioned as Kaluehaghæ or Skånningehafn. In the Middle Ages large herring catches in the Øresund area were important; the name Skånningehafn points to salted-herring fishing and trade, similar to areas near Copenhagen and in Scania. Herring was staple everyday food, especially during Lent, until the Reformation in the 1520s ended Catholic practice in Denmark. West of Kalvehave Færgegård lies Gammel Kalvehave, a small settlement with a winding village street and a small harbour; the settlement is older than the town around the ferry crossing with the old ferry berth. The harbour was once home to many professional fishers – up to 38 – who landed mainly eels for two smokehouses at the mole. Today only about one and a half professional fishers remain, plus a few recreational fishers and leisure sailors sharing about 45 berths in the harbour and 12 outside the moles. Gl. Kalvehave Havn is administered by Gl. Kalvehave Bådelaug; harbour, clubhouse, net houses and outdoor areas are maintained by the members.
