Frankfurter Yachtclub e.V.
Frankfurter Yachtclub e.V. is a traditional sailing and watersports club on the River Main in Frankfurt-Niederrad, founded in 1951 and firmly rooted in the Hessian sailing scene for 75 years. The waters in front of the pontoons are the Main at kilometre 31.4, with two slipways for dinghies, a crane rated to 2.8 tonnes, 22 water berths and numerous shore storage places. The club owns 31 sailing boats, including Optimist, 420, ILCA, Schwertzugvogel, 2.4mR, Polyvalk, Flying Junior and a J/70 for the German Sailing Bundesliga. Youth training for Optimist and 420, practical sailing instruction, recreational boat licence courses, club regattas and cruising define the programme. As the first Hessian club in the Sailing Bundesliga, FYC combines club tradition with ambitious racing.
History
Frankfurter Yachtclub e.V. was founded on 22 September 1951 at Bootshaus Maul in Frankfurt-Niederrad after the founding members split into a motorboat and a sailing club. In 1952 the so-called Glass Palace became the first clubhouse; the first autumn regatta in September was already well attended. The flagpole was inaugurated in 1953, followed by a well and slipway in 1954. Between 1957 and 1959 the present clubhouse was built and the Glass Palace converted into a workshop. In the 1960s the fleet grew strongly; Korsar, Pirate and later 420 dinghies shaped racing. Otto Bohn received the honorary title “Father of the Frankfurter Yachtclub”. Rudi Lust was long-serving chairman from 1969 to 1986. A retired coal crane was installed in 1969. In 1973 FYC fielded the largest 420 fleet in the DSV; in 1977 Joachim Oetken and Friedrich Boehnert became German 420 champions. In 1987 fleets shifted from Korsar to 420; Caroline Szesny and Ute Reccius competed at the 420 World Championship in Belgium. Franz Wehle established the club championship. In 1995 FYC hosted the 3rd Hessen Regatta and started a sailing AG with the Schiller School. In 2004 the club won the Hessen Cup. For its 60th anniversary in 2011 FYC received the Blue Flag and a new crane up to 3 tonnes. In 2019 a municipal water connection was added; the same year a fire destroyed the workshop, restored in 2020. In 2024 FYC became the first Hessian club to qualify for the Sailing Bundesliga. In 2026 the club celebrated its 75th anniversary with more than 170 participants.
