Flensborg Yacht Club e.V.

Flensborg Yacht Club e.V. (FYC) is the sailing club of the Danish minority in South Schleswig, located on the inner Flensburg Fjord at Fahrensodde. Since its founding in 1946, the club has combined tradition and modern regatta sailing at a shared marina with Seglervereinigung Flensburg. Around 220 active members use berths, a clubhouse, crane and slipway facilities, and an active youth section with Optimist and Europe dinghies. The programme includes sailing school on H-Boot, Wednesday evening regattas, international racing, the Danish Sejlsportsliga with J/70, and guest berths for visitors. As the only club south of the border, FYC is a member of both the German Sailing Association and Dansk Sejlunion.

History

The roots of Flensborg Yacht Club date back to 1936, when Dansk Juniorsejlklub was founded in Flensburg. With financial support from A. P. Møller, Knud Lauritzen and others, three junior boats were built. After the war the boats returned to Flensburg Fjord and formed the basis for Flensborg Yacht Club (FYC), officially founded on 26 June 1946. Initially the home port was the former naval harbour Meierwik until it was returned to the Bundesmarine in 1956. After a temporary stay in Lyksborg Quellental marina, the club moved to Fahrensodde in 1961. At first boats lay on mooring buoys with only a small storage shed ashore. A clubhouse was built in 1963 and extended in 1968. After SVF built the eastern breakwater, the current pontoon system followed in 1974; the western mole was added in 1992. Much of this work was done by members themselves. FYC joined the German Sailing Association in 1953 and in 1976 became the only club south of the border admitted to Dansk Sejlunion, linking sailors north and south of the German-Danish border. Regatta sailing has always been a priority, with successes at MAIOR, Als Rundt, Fyn Rundt, Sjælland Rundt, Kiel Week and many local events. Since 1971 the club organised the Lyø Rundt night race annually. In 1980 FYC hosted its first major international regatta; in 1987 an unofficial European championship for the X-79 class. Since 1992 FYC has cooperated with SVF through Regattagemeinschaft Fahrensodde GbR, including the Frühjahrswoche Flensburg. The youth section runs Opti and dinghy events with over 100 participants; juniors sail Optimist, Europe and smaller keelboats. Since 2005 the sailing school on H-Boot Luzie has trained new sailors. A new crane system was commissioned in 2021. The club has about 220 active members, up to 50 in the youth section, plus 30–40 supporting members. The marina accommodates around 120 keelboats and many dinghies.
