Faaborg Sejlklub

Faaborg Sejlklub is a traditional sailing club on Faaborg Fjord on Funen and presents itself as an oasis and activity centre for the whole family as well as a meeting point for Denmark's sailing elite. The club sits directly by one of the finest Nordic sailing waters in the historic market town of Faaborg and offers a clubhouse, pontoons, yard space, mast sheds and its own youth and sailing school. Members can learn to sail, train and race; the youth section sails Optimist, ILCA and 29er, complemented by Krabbe and Delfin clubs for the youngest. Founded on 24 January 1914 at the birthplace of Dansk Sejlunion (1913), the club today organises Wednesday racing, the Tuco Cup, Sejlsportsliga participation and the Danish OK Dinghy championships among other events.

History

At the start of the 20th century sailing was already widespread in Faaborg; larger cutters belonged to the townscape, including boats of well-known artists such as Tom Petersen (Maja), Peter Hansen (All Right), Frydensberg (Amatør) and sculptor Syberg, as well as German writer Bernhard Kellermann. Faaborg Fjord offered ideal conditions; in 1904 Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub held a major regatta there with seven starts. In 1913 Dansk Sejlunion was founded in Faaborg. On 24 January 1914 keen sailors founded Faaborg Sejlklub. First board: district judge H. H. Hvass as chair, hospital doctor Rosenberg as vice-chair, teacher I. Laursen as treasurer, plus manufacturer M. Jørgensen and confectioner Gottwald. The cash started with a 20-krone deposit from Rosenberg; annual dues were 4 kroner for active and 2 for passive members. The club burgee showed Faaborg's coat of arms in red on white; bylaws followed Svendborg Sund Sejlklub, Alfred Benzon's measurement rules applied, and the club paper was "Sund og Bælt". The first season programme included flag raising and gathering sails in May, local and distance races to Korshavn, Avernakø and Lyø, and outings with passive members. Today the club combines family offers, youth training, Wednesday racing, Tuco Cup, Sejlsportsliga and elite ambitions on Faaborg Fjord.
