Ellerbek-Wellingdorfer Segelklub e.V.

Ellerbek-Wellingdorfer Segelklub e.V. (EWSK) is a traditional sailing club in Kiel-Wellingdorf at the Schwentinemündung estuary on Kiel Fjord. Founded in 1926, the club combines modern sailing and motorboating with preserving the heritage of the former fishing village of Ellerbek. At Sporthafen Wellingdorf the club manages moorings, a clubhouse built by members, winter storage, and two club-owned fishing boats named Ellerbek and Wellingdörp. The weekly Wednesday regatta from Schwentinemündung with three start groups is the centrepiece of its sporting programme. The calendar also includes boat rowing, lantern parade, traditional costume group, club regattas, and social events such as the EWSK ship stage for the 2026 centenary.

History

In 1904 the fishing village of Ellerbek, where the naval arsenal stands today, had to make way for the expansion of the imperial shipyard. A new settlement was built for residents in the Schwentinemündung area, still known as the Fischeransiedlung in the Wellingdorf district beside Kiel's fish market. A new fishing harbour was built at Schwentinemündung, now Sporthafen Wellingdorf. In the mid-1920s fishermen mainly used heavy sailing boats that had to be rowed in calm weather, gradually replaced by motorboats. Some fishermen wanted to preserve sailing for future generations; 82 founding members established Ellerbek-Wellingdorfer Segelklub on 10 July 1926 at the Angnethabad seaside resort restaurant. The founding statutes already required preserving traditions of old Ellerbek. From 1926 to 1939 the club held an annual major regatta with a regatta ball. Activities ceased during and after the Second World War until a delegation was sent to the Hanseatic Week in Malmö, leading to revival in October 1954. Since then the club has again held sailing and motorboat regattas and weekly Wednesday evening races popular across Kiel Fjord. The former net drying area is now winter storage and the site of the member-built clubhouse. The club still maintains its traditions: the two club boats, Kahnrudern for the Schwentine bell, a costume group since 1954, lantern parade, and post-regatta breakfast. In the 21st century EWSK unites tradition and modern club life with mooring management and regattas at Schwentinemündung.
