History

On 16 October 1913, eighteen young sailors in Uppsala founded Ekolns Segelklubb, initiated by the then 25-year-old Elof Johansson, the first commodore. The constitutive meeting was held in an attic room on Dragarbrunnsgatan; the name deliberately distinguished the club from the existing Upsala Segel Sällskap (1907). In the first year the club grew by 28 members and had eleven boats. The first winter storage area was on Strandbogatan near the steam mill; later the gasworks harbour crane was used. In 1914 the first harbour lay at the mouth of the Fyrisån into Flottsundsviken. In 1925 a shore plot was rented from Baron Cederström at Kungshamn with a narrow pier. In 1929 the yard moved to the present site outside the then city boundary (lease from Vaksala Church). In 1933 the long-held wish to leave the river was fulfilled: the club leased berths at two jetties on the west side of Skarholmen (Granebergsbolaget) and built a clubhouse there. Further jetties, dredging and buildings followed, largely by member labour. The present fenced “new area” was added in 1970. Skarholmen remains the club’s main harbour today.
