Wassersportclub Lunden e.V.
Wassersportclub Lunden e.V. has operated Sportboothafen Nordfeld at the Nordfeld lock on the River Eider in Schleswig-Holstein since 1967. As the first tide-free harbour coming from the North Sea, the marina offers around fifty berths, a dinghy pier, slipway, clubhouse and power and water connections on the pontoons. Guests and members find sanitary facilities, showers, bicycles and play equipment on the grounds; juniors can use an Optimist dinghy as a starter boat. The club promotes watersports as a grassroots sport and serves as a stopover for transit sailors between the North Sea and the Baltic. A highlight is the complete harbour rebuild in winter 2020/21 with more than four thousand volunteer working hours by members.
History
Wassersportclub Lunden e.V. was founded in 1967 by a group of enthusiastic watersports enthusiasts. The club takes its name from the fact that most members at the time lived in nearby Lunden. Since founding it has operated the marina at the Nordfeld lock. It began with a landing stage along the Eider bank; because of strong cross-currents when the lock flushed, the club built three floating pontoon fingers across the river between wooden piles. The layout worked well and a fourth finger added more berths. With much labour and expense a clubhouse was built and the previously leased grounds were purchased. After almost fifty years the floating pontoons had to be replaced – one of the greatest challenges in club history. In winter 2020/21 more than four thousand working hours produced the new facility: three fixed steel structures for forty boats plus a dinghy pier for ten boats, founded on thirty steel piles, with electricity, fresh water and lighting. The new facilities were inaugurated with a large harbour festival on 10 September 2022. In 2020 the club provided its clubhouse for NDR filming about Jules Verne’s Eider journey. In August 2022 Dr Michael Scheffler donated an Optimist junior dinghy; in 2023 after renovation it was christened “Kleine Brise”. Today members come from all districts of the Schleswig-Holstein west coast; the club’s purpose is promoting watersports as a grassroots sport.
