Enköpings Segelsällskap

Enköpings Segelsällskap (ESS) is a traditional Swedish sailing and motorboat club in the municipality of Enköping and describes itself as “Sweden’s closest boat club”. The club operates a harbour in Enköping and the club island Klubbholmen at Kolarudd on the outer Svinnegarnsviken of Lake Mälaren, with clubhouse, jetties, kiosk, sauna, grill hut, showers and toilets. The programme includes youth and family training, sailing camps, day camps, Tuesday sailing, season-opening weekends, club championships and distance races such as the 6- and 12-hour events. Since its founding in 1916 with initially 27 members and eleven registered boats, ESS has been an open non-profit association with an active youth section, environmental work and Säker Hamn certification.

History

Enköpings Segelsällskap was founded on the initiative of Vicke Andrén (Andersson), Helmer Ström and Einar Wimer (Pettersson). The three formed an interim board on 18 April 1916; on 4 May the draft statutes, burgee and cockade were adopted and 27 members admitted. On 15 May 1916 the society was formally founded and the first board elected. Activity was lively in the first year: eleven boats were registered, and at Whitsun an escort cruise to Mariefred with ten boats took place. The open non-profit club aims to gather sailing and motorboating interests in Enköping municipality, secure harbour and winter storage places, use the Klubbholmen leisure area, organise courses and races, and promote nautical competence and the youth section. A jubilee publication marked the 100th anniversary in 2016. Today the environmental plan, the “Giftfri båtklubb” project (since 2021) and Säker Hamn certification with If are part of the club’s profile; ESS is a member of Svenska Seglarförbundet and Riksidrottsförbundet.
