Emmerwatersport

Emmerwatersport is the Watersportvereniging Emmen e.o. in the Dutch province of Drenthe and operates club berths in Klazienaveen and Nieuw Amsterdam. Members receive year-round assigned berths; Klazienaveen offers water taps as well as showers and toilets, while in Nieuw Amsterdam the maximum boat length is 15 metres. Transient visitors are welcome at the club quays, harbour masters look after the facilities and can be reached by phone. Club life is based on membership, volunteer work and waiting lists for new berths; a dedicated clubhouse is still missing despite the board's efforts. Since its founding in 2006 in Klazienaveen, the association has persevered through changing boards and disputes with authorities and celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026.

History

Emmerwatersport, the Watersportvereniging Emmen e.o., was founded in 2006 in Klazienaveen. Over the years the club has had changing members and boards with different ideas, yet has always remained. The berths are located in Nieuw Amsterdam and Klazienaveen and are maintained by the association. Until 1 November 2024 berths were mainly available in the winter period; the current board ensured that summer berths are also available so the club can now offer berths year-round. Since 1 November 2024 the first stretch in Nieuw Amsterdam is no longer under club management; from 1 May 2025 a berth ban issued by the Province of Drenthe also applies there. Since 1 August 2025 Gerrit de Jong has been volunteer harbour master in Klazienaveen with the same powers as the other harbour masters, without being a board member. The current board with Jan as chair, Kimberley as treasurer, Karlos as secretary, and Joey and Johan for the Nieuw Amsterdam harbour aims to revitalise club life and seeks a clubhouse. The Province of Drenthe rejected this, noting the club had managed without a clubhouse for twenty years. In February 2026 the association turns exactly twenty years old; a members' party with BBQ and live music is planned for 4 July 2026. Currently there are no free berths left in Nieuw Amsterdam or Klazienaveen; applications go onto waiting lists.
