Düsseldorfer Segelclub Unterbacher See e.V. (DSCU)

Düsseldorfer Segelclub Unterbacher See e.V. (DSCU) has been the sporting home of more than 100 members on Lake Unterbach in Düsseldorf since 1959, easily reached via the A3 and A46 at the Erkrath exit. Since 1994 the club has had its own premises with a clubhouse directly on the lake, club boats including a BM-Jolle and Sailhorse as well as eight Optimists; shared use of club boats is included in the membership fee. Children, young people and adults sail alone, in pairs or as a family on club boats, their own boats or boats hired from the Zweckverband. The multi-award-winning youth programme with Friday meet-ups, regatta training and inland powerboat licence courses shapes the offering alongside in-house regattas such as the Radschläger Piraten Regatta, Wednesday regattas and the Youth Boat Cup.

History

The club was founded in 1959 as Wassersportclub Unterbacher See (WSCU). The youth section started in 1963. In 1965 it was renamed Düsseldorfer Segelclub Unterbacher See (DSCU); a club burgee was designed with four white stars on a blue field. In 1969 the club exceeded 100 members for the first time. In 1986 Horst Schlichting received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his work in sailing and his idea for the Boot Düsseldorf trade fair. In 1994 the club moved into its own premises on Lake Unterbach for its 35th anniversary. In 2007 the clubhouse was made winter-proof with heating, enabling year-round use and many activities in the colder months. In 2009 the DSCU celebrated its 50th anniversary with major festivities and a commemorative publication. The club's youth work has received multiple awards (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017). In 2005 it received the City of Düsseldorf sponsorship prize for outstanding voluntary work in children's and youth sport. Lake Unterbach with its trees, wooded islands and wind channels presents a special sailing challenge and has produced many top national and international sailors, including Simon Heindl, who began his sailing career at the DSCU and became U-21 world champion in the 49er class.
