Gjøvik Seilforening
Gjøvik Seilforening is a sailing club on the shore of Lake Mjøsa in Fredevika near Gjøvik, Norway, about 500 metres south of the Skibladner pier. The sheltered harbour with pontoons for sail and motor boats, clubhouse, boat shed and sports pier forms the club hub; the breakwater is built from Olympic stone from the 1994 mountain hall. The club owns seven Optimist dinghies, four Feva and one 2.4mR for youth sailing, plus an active 2.4mR group. Wednesday regattas (spring and autumn cups), InterCity races against Hamar, sailing camps and Tuesday training shape the programme for families, leisure sailors and competitive sailors.
History
Gjøvik Seilforening was founded in 1973 and today has around 150 members and nearly 80 boats. The club base lies in Fredevika, about 500 metres south of the Skibladner pier in Gjøvik on Lake Mjøsa. The breakwater protecting the harbour from all wind directions was built from stone from the Olympic mountain hall constructed for the 1994 Games. Most members use their boats for leisure trips on Mjøsa with family and friends. Competition activity varies: many take part in the Wednesday club regattas from early summer into September, organised as spring and autumn cups. Together with Hamar Seilforening the InterCity race is held, alternating starts between Gjøvik and Hamar, passing south of Helgøya and gathering about 20 boats. A regular group also sails to the Oslofjord for the Færder Race and the Hovdan–Skagen Race. From the 2021 season the club strengthened children and youth sailing; the first sailing camp was an immediate success and was followed by fixed Tuesday training through the autumn. The club owns seven Optimist dinghies, four Feva and one 2.4mR for the youth group. The 2.4mR group is young but active and has already hosted a Norgescup event in home waters at Gjøvik. Clubhouse, boat shed and sports pier today form the heart of club life with courses, regattas, meetings and social gatherings with views over Mjøsa.
