Segel Sällskapet Gäddviken

Segel Sällskapet Gäddviken (SSG) is a traditional sailing club in Nacka near Stockholm, founded in 1911, with a particular focus on traditional wooden sailing yachts. The club runs a club harbour on Svindersviken (Kvarnholmsvägen), a clubhouse and its own club island Lilla Skratten with slipway, pontoon and timber jetties and a carpentry workshop. The programme includes racing, escort cruises, youth sailing and sailing camps as well as meetings for women and seniors. Since 1926 SSG has been a member of the Swedish Sailing Federation and works to preserve older leisure sailing craft; about half of the roughly 75 berth yachts are wooden boats.

History

Segel Sällskapet Gäddviken was founded in 1911 and is one of the traditional sailing clubs in the Stockholm region. One of the founders, Arvid Lindberg, is documented in the bay as early as 1910. Around 1927 a photograph showed the location on Svindersviken with the old shipyard site and the club; after the move to the northern shore a new chart was drawn in 1928. Since 1926 SSG has been a member of the Swedish Sailing Federation, so members can race under the club name. In 1932 the mast shed was built, and in the same year Evert Taube dedicated a poem to the clubhouse. Besides the harbour in Nacka the club runs the island Lilla Skratten and has continued to care for traditional wooden sailing yachts; today about 200 members and some 75 sailing yachts belong to the club, roughly half of them wooden boats.
