Göta Segelsällskap
Göta Segelsällskap is a non-profit sailing club in Stockholm, founded on 10 August 1895. Its home harbour is on Långholmen along the Långholm Canal; the club also owns the Jungfruholmarna islands in Lake Mälaren with a clubhouse, pontoons and facilities for visiting boats. Around 420 members and about 150 berths define the club, which is known for its classic wooden fleet. The programme includes regattas such as the Jungfrusund Regatta, club racing and social events on the club islands. The long tradition since founder G. F. Pettersson and the central Stockholm location make Göta Segelsällskap one of the larger sailing clubs in the inner city.
History
Göta Segelsällskap was founded on 10 August 1895 on the initiative of G. F. Pettersson (“Pråmpelle”), former owner of Lövholmsvarvet. The first meeting drew 26 people with 11 boats; the name won a vote against “Segelsällskapet Stjärnan”. Boats were first kept at Liljeholmen; in 1921 Långholmen became the home harbour. The Jungfruholmarna islands in Lake Mälaren have been used since 1915 and owned by the club since 1936; the clubhouse there was built in 1955. Over the decades the club ran yards and storage sites, including periods in Gröndal and on the former Långholmen prison yard. Today Göta Segelsällskap has about 420 members, roughly half with a boat in the squadron, and about 150 berths in the Långholm Canal. The club is known for classic wooden boats and organises regattas and festivities on the club islands, including the Jungfrusund Regatta and club sailing “Korv & Paket”.
