Koninklijke Brugse Zeil- & Yacht Club
The Royal Bruges Sailing and Yacht Club (BZYC) is a recognised sailing centre with two bases in Bruges and Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast. On the Boudewijn Canal in the rear harbour of Bruges, the club offers a clubhouse, boathouse and a large training fleet including Optimists, ILCA dinghies, Laser Bahia and keel yachts. The club operates as a WWSV-recognised sailing school and sustainable G-sport organisation, offering youth and adult courses, club regattas, Cadet sailing and accessible G-sailing. In Zeebrugge, the BZYC has run a Golden Anchor marina with berths for members and visitors since 2016. With more than 50 years of training experience, qualified instructor supervision and a broad leisure and racing programme, the club welcomes beginners, families and competitive sailors alike.
History
The Bruges Sailing and Yacht Club has existed in documented form since at least the 1960s, as photographs from 1967 show, and celebrated its 50th anniversary according to the statutes on 10 December. Under the supervision of notary Vrielynck, the board then founded the current non-profit association as the legal basis of the club. On 22 October 2022, a jubilee reception for all members and former members was held at Bruges town hall in the presence of the mayor and the governor. The club has continued to develop: on 3 September 2016, the new Golden Anchor marina and clubhouse in Zeebrugge were officially opened, turning the small sailing club from Bruges into a major yacht harbour on the Belgian coast. The BZYC has more than 50 years of experience in sailing instruction and is recognised as a sailing school by the Wind & Watersport Vlaanderen (WWSV) federation. Since 1988, the club has organised the traditional Meitrip, which began with the first edition from Ostend via Ramsgate to Veere in April 1988. The club operates two bases: Bruges on the Boudewijn Canal with clubhouse, training fleet and access to the sea via bridges and locks, and Zeebrugge in the Tijdok yacht harbour. As the only West Flemish sailing club, the BZYC offers regular G-sailing throughout the year in cooperation with Sailability, enabling people with physical or intellectual disabilities to sail under supervision. The club is also recognised as a sustainable G-sport organisation and invests in accessible infrastructure with a hoist, adapted boats and wheelchair-friendly pontoons.
