Burgenländischer Yacht-Club (BYC)
Burgenländischer Yacht-Club (BYC) is a non-profit sailing club in Rust Bay on Lake Neusiedl, combining leisure sailing with elite sport at the highest level. More than 100 berths, a clubhouse with restaurant, a club fleet with a Dehler 28 and several dinghies, and an intranet booking system define the site. The programme ranges from youth squad and regatta training through the Austrian Sailing League and BYC Club Trophy to projects such as Inclusion SailUnited. The club has more than 400 members, celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025, and records achievements from an Olympic medal to world and national championship titles and five league championship wins. Since its founding in 1955, BYC has grown from a small club hut into one of Austria's leading sailing clubs.
History
On 12 April 1955 the constitutive meeting of Union Yacht Club Rust-Eisenstadt took place in Eisenstadt; the club seat was initially fixed in Eisenstadt. After recognition by the association authority on 25 May 1955 the club joined the ASVÖ and purchased a club hut in Rust Bay in 1956. In 1957 the first club dinghy Pirat was acquired; in 1958 the club was renamed Yacht Club Rust-Eisenstadt and joined the Austrian Sailing Federation. In the 1950s the clubhouse, pontoons and first regattas off Rust were established; in 1959 the club hosted its first national championship in Rust Bay. Over the following decades the club grew steadily: facilities were expanded, youth work developed and numerous national and youth championships were hosted. BYC produced elite sailors in classes from Optimist through 420er and 470er to Olympic boat classes and celebrated success at world and European championships. In the Sailing League the club became Austrian record champion several times; in 2021, 2024 and 2025 the team won the national title in club sailing. In 2021 a BYC member qualified for the Optimist World Championship for the first time; Tom Zajac won Olympic bronze in 2016 and finished 11th in Tokyo 2021. Severe low water on Lake Neusiedl forced the club in 2022 to suspend sailing in Rust temporarily and relocate training to Mörbisch. In 2025 BYC celebrated its 70th anniversary with a large festival at the club grounds; Thomas Knoll became new president, Dieter Conrad vice president. Today the club has more than 400 members, more than 100 championship titles and over 100 berths in Rust Bay.
