Borgå Segelsällskap r.f. (BSS)
Borgå Segelsällskap (BSS) is a traditional sailing club in Porvoo (Borgå), Finland, with a boating heritage dating back to 1906. The club harbour Kugghamn sits by the Emäsalö bridge in Tolkkinen and serves as the base for junior and racing sailing. The guarded grounds include a pavilion, storage, pontoons, dinghy ramps and parking; the club also provides a motorboat and dinghies for members. BSS supports beginners through junior programmes and a Sailing Center with H-boats for novices and experienced sailors. In the Onas archipelago the club jointly runs the island base Killingholmen with Porvoon Kipparit, featuring pontoon, sauna and barbecue areas.
History
Borgå Segelsällskap (BSS) has upheld a boating tradition on the Porvoo coast since 1906. The classic Emsalö Runt race around Emäsalö island has been held since 1909 and is among Finland's oldest sailing events. Over the decades the club used several bases; the eastern part of Killingholmen island in the Onas archipelago has been leased jointly by BSS and Porvoon Kipparit since 1984. Kugghamn in Kräkelsundet became the first true home harbour: the club flag was raised there for the first time on 14 May 1997. Today Kugghamn by the Emäsalö bridge in Tolkkinen is the hub for berths, junior work and racing, complemented by Killingholmen with pontoon, cabin, sauna and barbecue spots. The club runs active junior training with Optimists, Laser and other dinghies plus a Sailing Center with two H-boats for members and guided sails.
