Bernauer Segel-Club e.V. Felden

Bernauer Segel-Club e.V. Felden (BSCF) is a long-established sailing club on Lake Chiemsee in Felden near Bernau am Chiemsee. Since its founding on 1 April 1968, the club has combined competitive sailing with an open, community-oriented club culture – deliberately keeping fees low to enable a broad range of sailing enthusiasts to join. The club grounds feature pontoons, a slipway, boat hall, mast crane and a clubhouse as the centre of club life. Racing classes include Optimist, ILCA, 29er and Musto-Skiff; BSCF regularly hosts regattas such as the Alpenland Trophy, Kreuz und Quer and the Herbstpokal des Südens. The active youth section offers training, taster sailing and a traditional youth sailing week during the Whitsun holidays. Successes at regional and international level, plus events from sailors' gatherings to the summer festival, shape the diverse programme on Bavaria's inland sea.

History

On 1 April 1968, twelve sailors met at the former Strandhaus guesthouse and founded the Bernauer Segel-Club. They were mostly friends who set out to sail from Felden and met at or near the Strandhaus. At that time there was neither club grounds nor club moorings; some boats lay at Lackerschmid, others in Irschener Winkel on buoys, or were pulled ashore after sailing and stored in the reeds behind the lakeside path. The name later had to be extended with 'Felden' because a club with the initials BSC already existed – hence Bernauer Segel-Club e.V. Felden (BSCF). One year after founding the club had 22 members, and 51 the year after. From the outset BSCF was not a club for millionaires or yacht snobs; joining fees and contributions were deliberately kept low. In 1969 BSCF bought and restored the former start boat of Chiemsee Yacht Club. In 1971 the club leased today's grounds from the motorway authority and built a new pontoon layout still in use today. In 1972 driveways, slipway, mast crane, shore reinforcement, equipment shed and racks for surfboards and Optimists were added; the first DSV 'A' sailing certificate courses began. Youth work started in 1973 with the first youngest-sailor certificate. From the 1970s the club hosted many regattas including quarter-tonner, Sailhorse, Neptun and Südkreuzer trophy events, and in 1975 the first German windsurfing championship. In 1977 came the first 'Rund um d'Insln' race; in 1978 the German 16 sqm jollenkreuzer championship with MBSC. In 1980 BSCF held a Sailhorse European championship. In 1982 the grounds were sold to Bernau municipality and the west pontoon renewed; the east pontoon was rebuilt in 1985. The 20th anniversary was celebrated in 1988, the 25th in 1993. Floods hit the grounds in 1991 and 1995, each time protected by many volunteers. Max Speicher became honorary president in 1992; a bypass road cost the club its car park, replaced by permit parking in front of the grounds. In 1996 Traunstein district office officially approved both pontoons. A new club building was built by members in 1997; in 1999 BSCF acquired a shared club boat, a Soling, and the youth section became self-governing under the statutes. The first Chiemsee championship was held in 2001; pontoons were renewed in 2002. In later decades BSCF developed into a strong training and regatta club on Lake Chiemsee: youth teams achieved success at German and Austrian 29er championships, hosted major Optimist events such as Herbstpokal des Südens and competed internationally. Traditional events including Seglerhocks, opening and closing of the season, youth sailing week in Whitsun holidays, Kreuz und Quer and the summer festival still shape the calendar today.
