D.S.W.Z. Broach
D.S.W.Z. Broach is the only genuine student racing sailing association in the Netherlands and is centred in Delft. Its home waters are the Braassemermeer, where training takes place with the club’s own fleet of two J/22s, one SB20 and two RS500s; Broach also competes in races throughout the Netherlands and beyond. The programme is open to students of all levels – from training for a world championship and occasional weekend racing to simply improving sailing skills or joining mainly for the social life. Club life includes a shared Tuesday evening meal followed by drinks, committees for events, boat maintenance and catering, and self-organised sailing events such as the Nestor Trophy Braassem Cup and the Slag om Delft. What stands out is the combination of ambitious racing and a strong student community, including an annual winter sports trip, a Christmas dinner and rallies.
History
D.S.W.Z. Broach presents itself as the only genuine student racing sailing association in the Netherlands and is rooted in Delft. The club owns a racing fleet of three boat types: two J/22s, one SB20 and two RS500s. Regular training takes place on the home waters of the Braassemermeer; Broach also races throughout the Netherlands and abroad, including the J/22 World Championship in Naples with boat NED1514. In addition to competing, Broach organises its own sailing events, notably the Nestor Trophy Braassem Cup as part of a series of team-sailing events for and by student sailing associations, and the Slag om Delft, a match-racing event on the narrow waters of the Zuidkolk in Delft. Club life is supported by committees that organise events, boat maintenance and catering. A fixed social anchor is Tuesday evening with a communal meal and subsequent drinks; over the year, winter sports, a Christmas dinner and rallies are added. New members are also welcomed through the summer intro week, an introductory week of sailing and social activities for prospective members.
