Bergens Seilforening

Bergens Seilforening is one of Norway’s oldest sailing clubs and is located in Hjellestad on Kviturspollen south of Bergen, in the heart of the western Norwegian archipelago. The club offers modern marina facilities with electricity and water on the pontoons, a clubhouse with toilets, showers and sauna, plus winter storage, dinghy racks and a mast shed. Juniors start in Optimist and progress via ILCA and crew boats to the J/70; adults find beginner courses, regattas and cruising. Since its founding in 1872, tradition, guest berths and active events such as Bergen Race Weekend have shaped club life.

History

Bergens Seilforening was founded in 1872 and is among Norway’s oldest sailing clubs. For more than 150 years the club has created sailing joy, community and maritime experiences for people of all ages in Bergen. Today’s grounds at Hjellestad on Kviturspollen are a meeting place for cruising sailors, racers and juniors. In 1923 the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (KNS) established the Bergens Pokal; racing first took place in the 22 sqm class between KNS and Bergens Seilforening teams, later in Dragons. The regatta was held in Oslo or Bergen, with a guest appearance in Horten in 1929. The last known contest was in 1972. Winners include members of the royal family – among them Crown Prince Olav – and Olympic medallists. Today the club has modern marina facilities, clubhouse, sauna, winter storage and mast shed and is affiliated to the Norwegian Sports Confederation via the Norwegian Sailing Federation. Current formats such as Bergen Race Weekend, Serieseilas, Shetland Race and junior work with Optimist, ILCA and J/70 continue the long tradition.
