E.S.Z.V. Boreas

E.S.Z.V. Boreas is the official Eindhoven Student Sailing Association, founded in 1987 and active on the water from March to October during club weekends, joint weekends with sister associations and competitive sailing. The boathouse at Kanaaldijk-Noord 57g in Eindhoven is the meeting point; on every first, third and fifth Wednesday members gather for a social drink. The club fleet includes the J/24 "Ad Oram Dejectum" as cabin cruiser and flagship, the Polyvalk "Hoebie", Flying Juniors for training on the canal and five Optimists; experienced members can rent boats. Besides relaxed sailing weekends in Friesland, the association offers intro weekends, training weekends, theory courses, regatta participation at NSKs and Nestor Trophies and its own Bob Race – welcoming both novice and experienced sailors.

History

E.S.Z.V. Boreas was founded in 1987 as the Eindhoven Student Sailing Association and grew into an active, close-knit community of students who sail, socialise and attend events together. From March to October the club is often on the water – during monthly sailing weekends from Friday evening to Sunday evening, weekends with sister associations and competitive sailing. The boathouse on Kanaaldijk-Noord in Eindhoven is the centre of club life; members meet there regularly, including on every first, third and fifth Wednesday for social gatherings. Over the years Boreas built its own fleet: the J/24 "Ad Oram Dejectum" was officially launched in Akkrum, Friesland in 2023 after decades of work and now serves as the club flagship for larger waters such as the IJsselmeer. The Polyvalk "Hoebie" succeeded the earlier "Bolle" and is ideal for relaxed days on the Frisian lakes. Flying Juniors and five Optimists are used for training and racing on the canal next to the boathouse. The club organises many regular activities: two intro weekends each year in April and September, an annual Dies dinner on 10 October for the club birthday, Christmas dinner, mid-winter BBQ with sister associations, themed drinks and an annual theory course in February. Racing members compete at NSKs, Nestor Trophies and the club's own Bob Race (Boreas Open Boat Race). Committees such as WalCie, MatCie, IntroCie, PromoCie and OpCie structure club life from social events and boat maintenance to training weekends. The motto "Boreas spirat nos deinceps!" – Boreas blows us onward – shapes the association's identity to this day.
