Askøy Seilforening

Askøy Seilforening is an active sailing club on Askøy island near Bergen and runs the Askøy Seilsportsenter in Kaggevikane/Kollevåg. The facility comprises around 130 berths, three large pontoons, two cranes, a dinghy slip, a boat hall and a modern clubhouse, and holds regional sports centre status for sailing in Hordaland. Classes sailed include Optimist, Yngling and J/70, with beginner courses, summer sailing school and a busy regatta programme featuring Askøy Rundt, Hjeltefjordtrimmen and Seilmakeren Doublehanded. Founded on 3 April 1979, the club grew from a temporary base at Hanøytangen into one of Norway's largest self-built sailing centres and will host the Yngling World Championship in 2026.

History

Askøy Seilforening was founded on 3 April 1979. In the early years the club had no permanent base until an agreement with Hilmar Reksten allowed use of the Hanøytangen quay (the old shop). When the bridge to the yard at Hanøytangen was built, the club had to find a new home. After more than ten years of planning and zoning work, groundbreaking took place in spring 1997 at Kaggevikane – in what is regarded as one of the largest volunteer efforts in Norwegian sailing. First a solid quay was cast, then the nine boat houses (nøst). Over roughly twenty more years the site grew to three large pontoons with about 130 berths, two cranes, a dinghy slip, a boat hall, the former temporary clubhouse and, as the crowning element, the modern new clubhouse. Askøy Seilsportsenter today has regional sports facility status for sailing in Hordaland. The club's most traditional race, Askøy Rundt, was first held in the founding year and was staged for the 42nd time in 2020; the 48th edition is planned for 2026. The club marked its 40th anniversary in 2019. Achievements include 4th place overall in the 2019 Norwegian Sailing League, hosting the open Melges 24 nationals in 2019, Yngling world champions, and hosting the 2026 Yngling Worlds and Seilmakeren Doublehanded as the 2026 national championship.
