Akademischer Segel-Club Berlin e.V.
The Akademischer Segel-Club zu Berlin e.V. (ASC) is a non-profit sailing club for students based on the Havel in western Berlin. For over 100 years, the club – which originated from the "Wildenschaft" at what is now TU Berlin – has enabled Berlin students to sail on its own boats at Lake Stößensee. The clubhouse with a large terrace, boat pier and Wi-Fi hotspot is located near Heerstraße directly on Lake Stößensee, almost next to TU Berlin's boathouse. With an inland sport boat licence, members can sail the club's dinghies, catamaran and yacht "Stropp IV" on the Havel and Wannsee as far as Potsdam; those without a licence can crew with others first. Regatta racing at beginner and advanced events, sailing training, annual training voyages on the North and Baltic Seas, club regattas and social festivals shape student club life at Lake Stößensee.
History
The Akademischer Segel-Club zu Berlin e.V. (ASC) is a non-profit club of sailing enthusiasts who are students. For over 100 years, it has been the club's mission to enable Berlin students to sail on its own boats. The ASC originated from the "Wildenschaft" at what is now TU Berlin, an association of students who did not want to join a student fraternity. Members meet at their clubhouse on Lake Stößensee for sailing and beyond – for social gatherings, barbecues and annual Christmas and Pentecost celebrations. The grounds are located near Heerstraße (300 m) on Lake Stößensee, almost next to TU Berlin's boathouse. The fully equipped house with a large terrace and boat pier is the centre of all activities; thanks to a Wi-Fi hotspot, the terrace is also ideal for relaxed studying in summer. At the heart of club life are the boats: members with an inland sport boat licence can sail the club's dinghies, catamaran and yacht "Stropp IV" on the Havel and Wannsee as far as Potsdam. Those without a licence should crew with a member first; it is also possible to obtain further licences such as the sea sport boat licence or coastal sport ship licence. The ASC regularly competes in beginner and advanced regattas and supports its members with sailing training and instruction to get started in racing. Every year the club runs training voyages on the North and Baltic Seas, where everything from basic sailing concepts and navigation to advanced boat trim can be learned.
