The Akademischer Seglerverein zu Hannover (ASVzH) is a non-profit sailing club focused on inland sailing on Lake Steinhude and offshore sailing aboard the club yacht Milonga. On the north shore in Mardorf, the club operates the Neue Moorhütte clubhouse, pontoon N3 with its inland fleet, a slipway and sanitary facilities. The club primarily targets students and young sailors, yet offers a broad programme from relaxed days on the lake to demanding Baltic Sea passages and regattas such as the MidsummerSail. Learning to sail is explicitly welcome: members can sail together first and receive support for SBF See, SBF Binnen and SKS training. Distinctive features include its mixed community, active club life with festivals and workshops, and ice sailing in winter as a member of the Steinhuder Meer ice sailing community.
History
Akademischer Seglerverein zu Hannover e. V. looks back on a long tradition reflected in annual foundation festivals, including the 144th in 2018. Since 1986, the former restaurant building Neue Moorhütte on the north shore of Lake Steinhude in Mardorf has been the club's home and the centre of inland sailing life. Over decades the fleet grew to include catamarans, skiffs, Zugvogel dinghies, jollenkreuzer and Optimists; the club yacht Milonga has sailed offshore and chain cruises for more than 25 years. ASVzH is a member of the Steinhuder Meer ice sailing community and sails DN iceboats when conditions allow. In the 2010s and 2020s the club acquired a Hobie Pearl catamaran, added stand-up paddle boards and regularly entered demanding regattas such as the MidsummerSail with Milonga. The ageing clubhouse received a major energy refurbishment costing around 500,000 euros, supported by programmes such as e.coSport with roughly 283,000 euros in grants. The club cooperates closely with Hannover University Sports Centre, offers winter courses for SRC, UBI, SBF and SKS, and combines sailing ambitions with lively social events, workshops and joint work on pier and boats.
