Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde e.V.

Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde e.V. (ASVW) is a performance-oriented sailing club at Yachthafen Mittelmole in Rostock-Warnemünde on the Baltic Sea. The club runs its own J/70 boats for the German Sailing Bundesliga as well as Laser and 470 dinghies for ambitious youth and dinghy racing, and maintains the club yacht SY Soltur for cruising. Since 2014 ASVW has competed in the Sailing Bundesliga and trains juniors and students through practice and regattas. Each year the club organises the Midsummer Cup around Fehmarn and the offshore Sail 360 race from Warnemünde to Oslo, and co-hosts the Wednesday evening regatta with Warnemünder Segelclub.

History

Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde e.V. emerged from the predecessor club HSG (university sports association) of the maritime engineering college Warnemünde/Wustrow, later part of the University of Rostock and Wismar University of Applied Sciences. In 1990 ASVW took over two seagoing 11-metre yachts and several dinghies. These yachts formed the heart of the club; the yacht “Mutafo” served as club boat until 2017 and was then sold to its regular crew. In spring 2014 the club celebrated the 40th anniversary of “Mutafo”. To strengthen student and youth work, the club sold the one-tonner “Nadir” in autumn 2001 and acquired an X-79, christened “Campus XW” on 24 March 2002. In 2012 the Yngling “Yoda” joined the fleet; in 2013 the one-off “Flyer” replaced “Campus XW”. In 2018 the club sold the Yngling and Flyer to focus on the J/70 “Charlotte” as training yacht for the Sailing Bundesliga. Since 2014 the ASVW team has competed in the Bundesliga and reached the first division in 2018. Earlier spring and autumn regattas were replaced by the Midsummer Cup at the summer solstice and the Gedser Cup on the last August weekend; the latter is succeeded by the Late Summer Cup / Sail 360 from Warnemünde to Oslo. Together with Warnemünder Segelclub, ASVW runs the Wednesday regatta and supports Warnemünder Woche. In 2025 honorary president and long-standing board member Peter Bartelt died at the age of 87.
