Akademischer Seglerverein der RWTH in Aachen e.V.
The Academic Sailing Club of RWTH Aachen e.V. (ASV) is a student-run sailing club for students in Aachen. At Lake Rur, about an hour's drive from Aachen, 13 race-ready club boats are moored at the club's own jetty – from Optimist and ILCA dinghies to 470er, Pirat and Polyvalk, plus the Kielzugvogel and the self-built 8-metre racing boat Voodoo. Members also sail offshore on the carbon yacht Aquis Granus IV and, since 2026, on Carolina from the North and Baltic Seas to the Mediterranean. Three theory courses are offered each semester, with practical training in summer; sailing on club boats and courses are free for members. Alongside the club's own Maiglöckchen Regatta, sailing camps, foundation festival and international regatta participation, social events and student self-governance shape club life.
History
The Academic Sailing Club of RWTH Aachen e.V. is registered in Aachen under VR 1249 and is based at Pontstraße 110. As a student-run club, all positions are held by students and most work is done on a voluntary basis. At Lake Rur the ASV operates its own jetty and hut where members can stay overnight and sail; the fleet includes 470er, Dyas, Folkeboot, Pirat, Laser, Optimist, Kielzugvogel, RS Aero, Polyvalk and RS 500. The self-built racing boat Voodoo was completed in winter 2003/2004 in around 1800 hours using stitch-and-glue construction to plans by Dr. Segger. In 2022 the Polyvalk Monopoly was acquired as a new training boat after the Dyas Rudolph was sold. Offshore, the club sails Aquis Granus IV, a full-carbon offshore yacht with over 300 m² of sail area that covers about 7500 nautical miles per year from the North and Baltic Seas to the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, Azores and Caribbean. Since 2026 the Beneteau First 34.7 Carolina has extended the fleet, mainly for the IJsselmeer and SKS training. The ASV hosts the annual Maiglöckchen Regatta on Lake Rur and competes in many regattas including Klenkes/Printen Regatta, Letzte Helden in Hamburg, Dyas regattas, Kiel Week and international offshore events. Twice a year sailing camps are held, along with foundation festival with Katercup, Labskaus meal after the annual general meeting and the national active members' meeting with sister clubs. The technically minded club developed the open-source regatta box Regate. In winter, students complete 48 maintenance hours on club boats.
